Position Overview
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organization that sets a globally recognized standard for sustainable fisheries, with the goal of ensuring the long-term health of marine ecosystems and seafood products through independent certification and ecolabelling. The MSC Fisheries Standard is structured around three core principles, with Principle 1 (P1) focusing specifically on the sustainability of target fish stocks.
SCS, a conformity assessment body that audits fisheries against the MSC standard, is seeking a Principle 1 (P1) Assessor to serve as the technical lead for evaluating fish stock status and fishery performance against the standard. This role combines scientific expertise in stock assessment with responsibility for drafting P1 report sections, ensuring technical rigor, and guiding scoring decisions across a portfolio of fisheries.
Remote Work: Home office-based position (USA), with potential for local, national, and/or international travel.
Estimated Salary: USD 75,000–90,000 per year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Auditing and Technical Expertise
- Lead the drafting and review of Principle 1 sections across all MSC report types, including initial assessments, surveillance audits, reassessments, and scope extensions.
- Serve as the technical lead and final reviewer, taking responsibility for the accuracy, completeness, consistency, and robustness of all P1 report content.
- Oversee recurring P1 requirements, including stock status updates, harvest strategy progress, harmonized milestones, and status determinations.
- Coordinate and participate in harmonization processes with other conformity assessment bodies and assessment teams.
- Evaluate and interpret scientific information related to stock status and fishing impacts in accordance with the MSC Fisheries Standard.
- Conduct technical reviews and provide guidance and training to auditors on Principle 1 and MSC requirements.
- Opportunity to progress into an MSC Team Leader role, leading fisheries assessment processes.
Project Management
- Manage a portfolio of fishery assessments from initiation through completion.
- Monitor project progress to ensure deadlines are met and objectives achieved.
- Serve as the primary client contact for operational and technical matters.
- Coordinate internal staff and external auditors to facilitate project delivery.
- Oversee the preparation and quality of assessment reports to ensure compliance with MSC requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fisheries, Marine Conservation Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Management, or a related field (e.g., Economics, Mathematics, Statistics).
- More than three years of experience in the fisheries sector in management roles or in research related to marine conservation biology, fisheries science, or fisheries management.
- More than three years of experience applying relevant stock assessment techniques.
- Lead authorship of two peer-reviewed stock assessments.
- More than three years of experience studying the biology and population dynamics of tuna or other large pelagic species.
- Experience leading teams and managing projects.
- Fluency in English and professional experience involving both written and verbal communication.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
- Fluency in French, Spanish, Mandarin, or Japanese.
- PhD in Fisheries, Marine Conservation Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Management, or a related field.
