About the Role

This role reports to the Operations Manager of PML Applications. The role will provide practical, technical support to design, install, maintain and operate bespoke marine testing hardware, as well as providing assistance for other marine environmental consultancy projects within the business as required, and subject to suitable training.

80% of the role will be based in the office, conducting field work and in the laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to assist with designing, installing, commissioning, operating and maintaining bespoke marine testing hardware, such as in-house dynamic marine coating test rigs and other hardware to enable experimental testing of marine coatings, materials and components.
  • Providing engineering focused content to help develop technical quotations, price work and design experiments.
  • Contribute engineering focused content to technical reports.
  • Provide basic electrochemical corrosion monitoring support for biocorrosion related projects.
  • Participate in occasional client facing meetings to help identify our clients technical requirements and demonstrate our capability.
  • Provide support to other areas of the business as required subject to suitable training i.e. small boat work, field based experimental deployments, laboratory based experimentation.
  • Compliance with health and safety policies.

Skills & Attributes

  • IT literate and comfortable with Microsoft packages (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams and data analysis packages).
  • Excellent technical writing ability in an engineering context. Evidence will be required.

  • Highly organised and efficient and comfortable with commercial applied research requirements such as working to time and budget.
  • Fine attention to detail.

Experience

  • At a minimum, three years' experience of mechanical marine engineering including design, assembly and maintenance.
  • A minimum of NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualifications in Marine engineering preferred; Mechanical, Electrical, Ocean or Maintenance engineering applicants will be considered.
  • Knowledge of electrochemical techniques and associated field work procedures to support corrosion trials or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of materials in terms of design choices and/or degradation mechanisms in the marine environment or willingness to learn.
  • Experience and physical ability in marine field work settings (manual handling, Health & Safety awareness, and hand tool use etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of electrochemistry and/or willingness to learn electrochemical techniques and associated field work procedures to support corrosion trials.
  • Experience of being involved in complex projects and working with busy teams.
  • Experience of making professional decisions autonomously, within provided guidelines.
  • Experience of client facing roles and providing direct customer service.
