Overview

The Marine Scientist plays a key role in executing comprehensive offshore surveys. This position involves the collection and analysis of subsea data using advanced geophysical and/or geotechnical technologies. The Marine Scientist is responsible for ensuring data accuracy, adherence to client specifications, and compliance with industry standards. Reporting to the Head of Operations and to the Party Chief when assigned to a vessel, the Marine Scientist may assume a variety of project roles, including that of Party Chief for those with the high level of experience. She/he is also accountable for ensuring that all data is acquired in a manner that supports accurate processing and interpretation in line with required quality standards.

Key responsibilities

-Conduct geophysical and geotechnical surveys using specialized equipment:- Geophysical equipment: Multibeam and single-beam echosounders (MBES + SBES), Side Scan Sonar (SSS), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP), Ultra High Resolution Seismic (UHRS) and Magnetometry (MAG) (Etc.)- Geotechnical equipment: Cone Penetration Test (CPT), Vibrocorer (VC), Pistoncorer (PC), GravityCorer (GC). The Surveyor is experienced with several types of geophysical and/or geotechnical equipment among the list provided above and is eager to learn about additional equipment to enhance his/her versatility.

-Depending on her/gis skill set, occupy various offshore or onshore project roles, including but not limited to: surveyor, geophysicist, geologist, MMO, PAM, Geotechnical Expert, Geophysicist, Marine Geologist, Data Processor, GIS/Charting Technician, FLO, ROTV pilot, offshore processor or data coordinator (etc.)

-Adhere to health and safety regulations, environmental and quality policies, and industry standards during operations, including the 7 rules that save lifes.

-Gather and record accurate and reliable data on sea floor depth, underwater obstructions, and seabed conditions (Mobilize, calibrate, operate and maintain survey equipment).

-Configure and test data acquisition and processing software to ensure compatibility and proper operation.

-Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of survey procedures, data collection methods, and equipment configurations.

-Troubleshooting - Diagnose and resolve technical issues with equipment, software and vessel during field operations.

-Lead / supervise equipment deployment and recovery operations.

-Process, interpretate and monitore subsea, seismic and surface navigation data.

-Assist the Survey Manager in any survey preparation work including the redaction of reports and procedures.

-Conduct cross-validation checks with different data sets to confirm accuracy.

-Identify and mitigate data artifacts, noise, and errors.

-Analyze processed data to generate bathymetric charts, digital terrain models (DTMs), and other relevant data products.

-Interprete geophysical data to identify seabed features, sub-seabed structures, and potential hazards.

-Ensure all documentation complies with project requirements and industry standards.

-Assist the Data Coordinator in the configuration of the online survey system.

-Work closely with the Data Center team to coordinate survey activities, ensure data quality and support project objectives.

-Stay updated with advancements in hydrographic surveying technology and techniques.

-Prepare detailed quality assurance documentation and reports.

-Comply with what is established in the Tradebe's Responsibilities and Authorities Guideline in the role of "All workers/Todos los trabajadores" and "Preventive Resource/Recurso Preventivo".

-Report any deviaƟon or non-conformity through the established channels, at all levels, including operaƟonal, safety, health, environmental, and quality aspects.

-Maintain traceability during the operations fill in all the needed information in the assigned templates.

-Attend all the trainings proposed by the manager.

-Maintain the equipment tracking application updated to make sure equipment management is under control.

-Carry out other tasks as assigned by manager.

Academic


Bachelor’s degree in Hydrography, Marine Geomatics, Oceanography, Geophysics, or a related field.

Experience


3 years of experience in geophysical and/or geotechnical surveying in offshore environments or related fields or experience.

Software


Utilize and maintain specialized data acquisition software and tools, such as QINSy, Qimera, NaviSuite, CARIS, QPS, HYPACK, SonarWiz, autoCAD/autoCHART or GIS applications.

Language


English mandatory (100%).
Spanish desired.
Catalan desired.
Other European language is a plus.

-Capability to work in challenging offshore environments, including confined spaces, heights, and varying weather conditions.
-Must be available for flexible scheduling during the acquisition phase, including extended hours and weekends, to accommodate operational demands and ensure uninterrupted data collection.
-Strong problem-solving skills.
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
-Knowledge of hydrographic survey principles, geophysical and geotechnical methods.
-Ability to work offshore, involving extended periods on vessels.
-Relevant certifications such as Hydrographic Surveyor Certification or industry-specific training (e.g., BOSIET, HUET).
-Ability to work effectively within a team.
-Familiarity with data integration and visualization techniques.
-Strong appetite for learning new technologies and acquiring new skills.
-Strong work ethic and professional attitude.
