Research and Teaching Assistant – Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology

About the Position

Full-time position as "Research and Teaching Assistant" based in Liège, 1 year, renewable three times, in the fields of Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology.

Your Tasks

(Supervised by Prof. Sylvie Gobert, and with the assistance of a senior research assistant)

• Assist Professor Sylvie Gobert with teaching activities (approximately 50% of working time) in both English and French, in the fields of Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology. Responsibilities include lectures, tutorials, practical classes and field-based practical courses for the Master's in Oceanography, the Erasmus Mundus MER and ECT programmes, and the Bachelor's in Biological Sciences. Candidates who are not yet proficient in French will be expected to develop an adequate level of proficiency within one year of appointment.
• Contribute to the organisation and coordination of field-based practical courses, practical classes and tutorial sessions.
• Provide administrative and logistical support within the Master's in Oceanography and the Erasmus Mundus MER and ECT programmes.
• Devote the remaining 50% of working time to scientific research leading to the completion of a PhD thesis under the supervision of Professor Sylvie Gobert. The research will be conducted within the framework of the STARECAPMED project and will contribute to the research activities of Professor Gobert's Oceanography Laboratory in the fields of Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology.
• Reside in Belgium, preferably in the Liège region or its surrounding area, for the duration of the appointment.

What I Am Looking For

• Hold a Master's degree in Biological Oceanography, Marine Ecology, or a closely related field. The degree requirement must be fulfilled by the start of the appointment (October 2026).
• Demonstrate a strong interest in academic research, teaching, and service to the university.
• Possess excellent communication and teaching skills in both English and French. Candidates who are not yet proficient in French will be expected to develop an adequate level of proficiency within one year of appointment.
• Demonstrate strong organizational and coordination skills, including the planning and organization of courses, practical sessions, student activities, teaching schedules, and the management of educational resources and equipment.
• Have a collaborative mindset, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds.
• Be a competent swimmer and enjoy working in marine environments, including field-based activities.
• Hold a scientific diving certification or scuba diving qualification, which will be considered an asset.

What We Can Offer You

• A one-year appointment, renewable up to three times for an additional one-year period, subject to a positive evaluation of the previous appointment term.
• The appointment will start on 1 October 2026.
• The remuneration will be determined in accordance with the University of Liège's salary scales and applicable regulations, which are available from the University's Human Resources Department.
