About MARBLE

MARBLE – Centre of Excellence for Maritime Robotics and Technologies for a Sustainable Blue Economy – is a non-profit research organisation financed by the European Commission under the prestigious Horizon Europe Teaming programme, founded by the University of Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. The main goal of MARBLE is to engage Croatia in a path of sustainable innovative growth in the blue economy in a strategic partnership with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the National Research Council (Italy).

About the Role

We are seeking a Researcher to work within the Research Department of CoE MARBLE, primarily within the ARTEMIS project. The successful candidate will contribute to the development, integration, testing, and deployment of autonomous maritime robotic systems, with a focus on control, navigation, system integration, and field validation.

Workplace: MARBLE, Froudeova 13, Zagreb, Croatia. Contract: Full-time (40 hours/week), 3-year duration. Envisaged start date: June 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the objectives and technical activities of MARBLE and the ARTEMIS project.
  • Design, implement, and validate control, navigation, and autonomy solutions for maritime robotic systems.
  • Integrate robotic hardware, sensors, communication systems, and software components on autonomous maritime platforms.
  • Participate in laboratory testing, field deployments, and trials at sea.
  • Develop and maintain robotic software using modern robotics frameworks and tools.
  • Contribute to system architecture, verification, validation, and experimental evaluation activities.
  • Publish high-quality research in Q1 journals and conference papers.
  • Contribute to the preparation of new research proposals.
  • Participate in public outreach activities and in the organisation of conferences/special sessions.
  • Participate in knowledge transfer activities and skills development programmes.

Candidates' Profile

  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (or PhD thesis submission with defence expected by end of 2026).
  • 3 years of work experience.
  • Exceptional organisational and time-management abilities.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a results-oriented mindset.
  • Experience in robotics, autonomous systems, control systems, or related areas.
  • Experience with robotic software development (ROS/ROS2).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the English language.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Driver's licence: B category.
  • Experience in maritime robotics and autonomous marine systems.
  • Experience in system integration and deployment of robotic platforms.
  • Experience in trials at sea and field experimentation.
  • Experience in guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of autonomous robotic systems.
  • Experience with localisation, perception, and sensor integration.
