The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina's fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws.

Description of Work

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for an Anadromous Research Coordinator (Conservation Biologist II) for the Inland Fisheries Division.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Inland Fisheries Division manages, conserves, enhances, and restores the State's freshwater fishes, mollusks, crayfish and supporting aquatic habitats through fisheries research, fisheries management, hatchery operation, and habitat conservation.

The Anadromous Research Coordinator (Conservation Biologist II) is responsible for designing and conducting biological research and surveys of anadromous species in coordination with district biologists and other staff. The position serves as a liaison between the Commission and other state and federal agencies responsible for managing anadromous fisheries; coordinates diadromous fisheries and other research on Roanoke River as prescribed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) hydropower license conditions and settlement agreement with Dominion Energy; and provides technical guidance and information transfer to other agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations. Most activities are conducted within the coastal region. Some projects may involve the temporary supervision of one or more conservation technicians or temporary employees.

The position serves as the Commission's lead biologist on the Dominion Energy Diadromous Fish Restoration Technical Advisory Committee, coordinates Commission participation with other management teams, and coordinates contracted research with universities. The position serves on Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission technical committees for shad and river herring as well as striped bass. This position also represents the Commission on NC Division of Marine Fisheries plan development teams for anadromous species to assist with conducting regional stock assessments and writing fishery management plans.

This position is home-based. The incumbent must reside within North Carolina's coastal region (Districts 1, 2 or 4). This is a Monday–Friday position, working 40 hours per week. This position requires frequent travel, including occasional overnight travel, as well as travel to the WRC-HQ in Raleigh, NC.

  • Experience designing, conducting, and analyzing biological research.
  • Experience preparing written reports and verbal presentations to effectively communicate with resources professionals and the public.
  • Experience operating or maintaining field or laboratory equipment used in aquatic resource management.
