Postdoctoral Researcher – Blue Carbon in Seagrass Ecosystems

The Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in blue carbon dynamics in seagrass ecosystems. The successful candidate will join the Seagrass Ecology Lab and a multidisciplinary research team within the EU-funded LIFE project LIFE LULUCF ATLAS.

Research Area

The successful candidate will study carbon storage and greenhouse gas fluxes in seagrass ecosystems and will evaluate seagrass restoration outcomes for carbon sequestration.

Location: Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Duration: 24 months, with possibility of extension subject to funding availability. Starting date: Flexible, but no later than 4 January 2027.

Main Responsibilities

• Design and conduct field surveys.
• Process and analyse biogeochemical samples.
• Manage and analyse data and write up findings for peer-reviewed publications and reports.
• Develop visualisations for communicating research results.
• Contribute to grant writing and other fundraising efforts.

Qualification Requirements

• Knowledge of coastal wetlands, biogeochemistry and carbon inventories.
• Field and laboratory experience on blue carbon methodologies.
• Scuba diving certification at the rescue diver level.
• Experience in working with large datasets.
• Proficiency in statistical computing platforms.
• Excellent knowledge of the English language.
